Set Review ➟ 42102 Mini Claas Xerion

The second smallest Technic set of 2020 is a nod to one of LEGO’s flagship sets of 2016, the 42054 Claas Xerion 5000. That set contained almost 2000 pieces, but this time the mini Claas Xerion only has 130 pieces.

Both machines share the same colour (characteristic of the Claas brand) and the basic silhouette of the cab, but this time instead of an articulated arm, the tractor comes with a pair of tedders.

It is always interesting to see how many mechanisms you can include in such a small model, and this one does not disappoint. As you would expect, the tractor has steering that is operated from above the cab. In the picture above you can see that the tedders can be raised. Finally, the rear wheels are connected to the tedder mechanism which makes the two large black wheels turn when the tractor is moved.

Three mechanisms in such a small model is quite a achievement.

The set also has a secondary model:

Although the model requires a complete reconstruction, the result is not very different from the main model. In this case the tedders are placed in the front and cannot be lifted anymore so we lose a function. However, considering that it is a licensed set and that both models must reasonably resemble Claas machines, the secondary model is quite good.

After building the secondary model there are about twenty pieces left over, almost all of them small.

It is clear that, although the set contains few pieces, there are a multitude of construction possibilities. If you look in rebrickable you will find some very attractive models. One that I especially liked is a Formula 1 car created by Nequmodiva and for which there are free instructions available at Rebrickable.
