Set Review ➟ 42106 Stunt Show Truck and Bike
Theme: Technic
Year: 2020
Parts: 610
In addition to two small pull back sets, this year the LEGO Technic line-up includes a larger set with a pullback motor. The smaller sets contain around 225 parts, this was almost 3 times that number.
The traditional pullback motor set contains a small vehicle that usually has a single function: the pullback motor. These sets normally don’t include any other mechanisms. This year LEGO managed to add opening doors and a hood to the 42104 Race Truck and a wheelie bar to the 42103 Dragster, but even so the sets are fairly simple. The 42106 Stunt Show Truck and Bike is a big contrast. The set contains 2 vehicles, and while the pullback motor is—in my opinion—still the most interesting mechanism, there are plenty of other interesting things going on for a Technic fan.
The set is built in 3 stages, using 4 numbered bags.
Part 1—the Stunt Bike
The set is very nicely paced and starts out with a simple and fast build that immediately provides a lot of playability. The Stunt bike includes the pullback motor and as a bonus there are 3 16t gears to transfer the power of the motor to the rear wheel. The wide tires provide excellent stability. Initially I had my misgivings about the playability of this vehicle, but as it turns out, the bike is incredibly stable and it is great fun racing it.
Part 2—the Trailer
At first sight the trailer looks like a simple build, but it includes 2 mechanisms that provide lots of playability. The main mechanism is located below the trailer. With the turning of a knob the trailer turns into a ramp. The loading ramps at the back provide a smooth transition between the trailer bed and the floor and together they immediately create a new opportunity for play: making your stunt bike jump.
The second mechanism is actually a removable complement that allows you to load the bike safely on the trailer when in vertical position. After removing it the bed of the trailer is completely smooth and safe for stunts.
Part 3—the Truck
Having a trailer means you also need a vehicle to tow it. In comes the truck which is built in two stages. The model is fairy simple, but contains a steering mechanism with HOG on the roof, and the doors open to reveal the seats and steering wheel. The wheels are quite thin, but look really good on the model. The rest of the truck is mostly panels and of course there is a coupler at the back to tow the trailer.
The truck is easy to drive, but its main asset is yet to come. The final addition to the trailer is a large hoop with flame elements that attached right behind the cabin of the truck. The hoop is large enough for the stunt bike to pass through, completing the stunt setup: placed judiciously, the ramp allows the stunt bike to jump through the hoop and over the truck.
It takes some technique to make this happen, but the result is lots of fun and great play value for a Technic set.
Conclusion
I was pleasantly surprised with the set. Two vehicles and lots of play opportunity, some simple mechanism and a good number of panels (for those who want to use the set as a parts pack). There are 19 stickers in the set, and they do make it look more attractive, although the colour scheme of black red and light blue itself is already very nice.
