Set Review ➟ 10272 Old Trafford: Part 1

The latest LEGO Creator Expert set is large!. You can already see so from the box:

3898 pieces in bags numbered from 1 to 21 are enough for a number of building sessions, so we will divide this review into a few parts to cover the experience in enough detail.

The basic element of any football stadium is the football field so it is no surprise that the first thing we build is… the pitch. As is the case with all the structures in this set, the basis is made up of a combination of Technic Bricks and plates that give it good consistency

On top of this base go the tiles that make up the actual field. There are 2 tiles 8x16 and 3 tiles 8x8 which are all printed and together make up the pitch. In addition there are smaller tiles to complete the base.

The goals are places on one side and are printed on the side facing up.

The complete field takes up 28 x 18 studs:

The next element we build is the East Stand which takes up bags number 2, 3 and 4. bags numbered 5, 6 and 7 serve to build Stretford End which is right across the field and in a large part the mirror image. Let's first have a look at the parts they have in common.

On both sides the rows of seats are built sideways, combining bricks and plates. The smooth bricks will have stickers (on the side you see). There are also a few clips which will fit on the bars—Tan for the lower stands, yellow for the top stands. The result is quite striking:

The most interesting part of both sides is the structure that holds up the roof. The roof is also built sideways and placed in opposite direction to the stands. After adding it to the construction it hinges down to the stands

The suspension structure is an interesting build, and some of the steps require quite some strength. The result is excellent.

The most important differences between the two appear on the outside. The East End has a glass façade which—as explained in the instructions—houses the club's administrative centre and the megastore. The façade also contains a statue of Sir Matt Busby, represented by a black micrifig.

On the other side—Stretford End—the façade is much more functional and only contains some structural elements.

Of course all the stands have their corresponding lettering and there are also stickers for the scoreboard, publicity and the stairwells that provide access to the top stands.

Little by little Old Trafford is taking shape and you can see how big it will eventually be…

So far we have only used 7 bags. The next part is the main stand and will require the use of bags numbered 8 to 16!
