Set Review ➟ 31102 Fire Dragon

By Angela & Matai Thomsen

Theme: Creator 3-in-1
Release: 2020
Parts: 234

A-Model: Fire Dragon

This was a more challenging model to build, and includes a fire-breathing dragon and a treasure chest. The dragon is around 15cm high and features many moveable parts—the head, mouth, wings, feet and tail can all be manipulated for a full range of movement. The fire in the mouth is an awesome detail and encourages imaginative play. The treasure in the chest is realistic with many points of finer detail. Though this is the most difficult of the three sets to build, it is also the most rewarding.

Grade: 10/10.

B-Model: Sabre-Tooth Tiger

The sabre-tooth was a moderately tricky build. The final product is impressive but fragile, due to the use of 1x2 plates in parts lacking structural strength. Standing on all fours it is a little under 10cm high and 19cm long. It uses only 140 of the set’s pieces, which was a little surprising given its size and detail. The colours are good and mimic the dark and light shades of fur often found on animals’ backs and stomachs respectively. The head is passably realistic and can be manipulated from side-to-side as well as up and down. The highlights are the bright green eyes and the 5cm sabers located next to the teeth. The construction of the legs could be confusing for younger builders, though the feet and legs are jointed which is a great feature. The claws are made from the same parts as the teeth (15208 modified 1x2 plate), and there are six of these in the set. The tail is 5cm long and made from seven pieces. A Technic 1x2 Brick with Hole is hidden under it as a cheeky bit of realistic detail.

Grade: 7/10

C-Model: Scorpion

This was a quick and easy build which does not use all of the pieces in the set. It is visually interesting and has many moving parts, including head, tail, pincers, stinger and legs. The big front teeth give it a vicious look. The colours used are mainly dark red, dark blue, yellow, and black. The creature manages to look both real and unreal at the same time. The detailing is good, especially the range of movement in the claws and tail.

Grade: 7/10

Conclusion

(By Adrian)

This is another solid and well-designed Creator creature pack, despite its obvious similarity to 2018’s 31073 Mythical Creatures set. The head on the main build in particular is very nicely built, though it looks a bit too colourful to be properly menacing. Perhaps the wing parts would have been better in black, though no doubt collectors will appreciate these parts in dark blue as well.

Overall Grade: 8/10
