Set Review ➟ 31100 Sports Car
Theme: Creator 3-in-1
Release: 2020
Parts: 134
This is a nice little set with a good range of standard pieces to add to your collection. It includes many red and black bricks, plus lots of useful SNOT pieces and small curved slopes which are versatile parts for MOCs. It compares well with early Creator sets that had only two models and very basic types of brick. The instructions are excellent, with only a few parts per step which is good for young children.
Model A
The first build is the sports car shown on the front of the box. With a six-wide chassis, widening to 8-wide at the front and rear bumpers, this is a great scale for minifigures. The build is based on a nice Technic frame, and makes good use of curved slopes to achieve a sleek front and inverted curved slopes to make a nice spoiler. The completed model is very playable, and the treaded tires make a satisfying noise rolling it along a hard surface. With the studs-up design, the car is adaptable for customisation through the addition of your own accessories. The model took about twenty minutes to build, and uses all but six of the pieces in the set.
Grade: 8/10
Model B
The second build is an old-fashioned front-engined open-wheel race car. It has an interesting shape for the back with a cute little exhaust. The four-wide technic frame works well in comparison with older sets and the car can fit a minifig driver. SNOT techniques are used for the doors, and the wedge plate inside the build is a good alternative use of the set’s parts. Overall, this is not as good as the main build though it has the same playability. It took about twelve minutes to build, and had many leftover parts.
Grade: 7/10
Model C
The third build is a twin-engined plane built to a much smaller scale than the previous two cars, and it is also the easiest build of the set. I like the use of curved slopes for the fuselage as well as the use of layered wedge plates to make a sloped wing. The inward facing SNOT under the wings is also a neat trick. This model is a good demonstration of microscale building, and only took ten minutes to put together.
Grade: 6/10
Conclusion
I think this set is well-suited for younger children, and could also be an affordable way for AFOLs to build up their parts collection. [Adrian’s thoughts: I think the red, black, and white colour scheme works really well, and it’s nice to get engine parts for the cars. The plane build in particular stands out for me as being particularly nice for a C-Model. I do think though that a narrower wheel/tire choice might have looked better on each of the two cars.]
