The LEGO® Castle Book

Title: The LEGO Castle Book—Build Your Own Mini Medieval World
Author: Jeff Friessen

There are many ways to challenge yourself building LEGO. For many of us minifig scale is the one and only true standard. For others building big is the true dream. There is, however, a real challenge in building small, really small: microscale small. Jeff Friessen publishes his second title with No Starch Press, and just as his first title it focuses on microscale building.

Micro scale building requires you to rethink the way you use your LEGO pieces. A simple slope can become a mountain, a single jumper plate a ship. In this book, Jeff Friessen takes you by the hand to help you discover a new dimension in LEGO elements—a new way of looking at well known pieces.

The book starts out with an overview of the different types of parts that are used in it and new ways to use them and where to get them.

It then moves on to provide a short history of castles, explaining some terminology and illustrated with beautiful images of microscale LEGO castles. The pictures are clear and detailed and provide enough detail to allow you to try your hand at recreating them with your own pieces.

Chapter 2 goes into the different professionals that collaborated in the construction of castles and again the images that accompany the chapter (minifigs involved in construction) make the pages come to life.

Chapters 3 to 5 are my favourite chapters. They go into a detailed description of the anatomy of a castle and how to reproduce those details in micro scarle. There are plenty of small builds with instructions to illustrate the concepts.

The rest of the book—slightly less than half—consists of step by step instructions for six complete mini scale LEGO castles, including the one on the cover of the book.
