Set Review ➟ 42095 Remote-Controlled Stunt Racer

The second LEGO Technic set for 2019 that we will examine more closely is the 42095 Remote-Controlled Stunt Racer. As we already showed some weeks ago, this vehicle looks a lot like the 42065—RC Tracked Racer from 2017 and contains a similar number of pieces. The data sheet of the set is:

Set: 42095
Name: Remote-Controlled Stunt Racer
Parts: 324
Price (in Spain): 89,99€

The number of parts doesn’t come close to that of the 42094—Tracked Loader, the previous set number with a very similar set size, but that’s no surprise considering the number of electronic components the set contains.

The set doesn’t come with many surprises on the front: the set is motorised with the Power Functions system. There are many fans who were expecting to see a set with the new Powered Up system (used in Trains, the Batmobile controlled with an app and in LEGO Boost), but already last year the LEGO Technic designers we interviewed in Billund explained that for the moment Power Functions does what they need and the transition to the new system will take some time (you can read the complete interview in HispaBrick Magazine 029).

What the box does show is a new element: a large sprocket for the tracks.

Up until now, the largest sprocket had 10 teeth (the smallest one only 6, but that does not appear in this set) and the new one has 14.

Other interesting elements in this set include several light blue panels beams as well as 1x1 round tiles with metallic print.

The selection of electronic elements includes 2 "L" motors, a battery box, an IR receiver and a remote control:

The instructions do show a novelty: in the bottom right corner there is an icon that indicates the instructions for the main and the secondary model will be available through the LEGO Life app. Inside the booklet there are further explanations. Unfortunately at the moment of writing this review the link is not yet active but it will be by January 1 when the set is officially launched.

Finally there is a sticker sheet:

Building begins with the nucleus of the mechanism: the two "L" motors that will move the model and are connected to a pair of I frames.

The remainder of the construction is not particularly interesting and quite standard. In addition, since the set contains only 324 pieces you con build it quite quickly.

The model looks good and the stickers make it look even better.

Once the model is built it is time for some fun… time to "race" the model and do some "stunts" with it. The "L" motors are quite powerful, but not particularly fast, and although the vehicle has a good speed for small spaces it is not very fast.

The configuration of the motors and the treads does not allow for much modification of the gears, but it is possible to change the two 16t gears that transmit power from each motor to the treads. A simple modification is to swap those gears for a combination of 12t y 20t. However, this change does not result in a significant improvement. As a matter of fact, if the batteries are not fully charged it may not move at all.

Next up is trying to improve the behaviour using rubber inserts. There are two types. The red ones come from th EV3 expansion set that LEGO Education markets. The black ones from the Nexo Knights sets.

Although traction improved somewhat the most spectacular change is obtained if you go from a hard floor (wood, tiles) to a soft floor (carpet or rug). Then you really do het to do some stunts!

The set is a good parts and electronics pack to add to your collection. The secondary model remains to be seen, but it will not have a very different behaviour. If what you want is to du stunts with a remote controlled LEGO Technic vehicle, this is your set. If you prefer mechanisms and building experience, there are other sets that are more satisfying.

We wish to thank LEGO for providing this set for review—however, all our opinions are our own and LEGO neither approves nor endorses our site.
