The LEGO Movie 2 - Visiting Classic Themes
It has been four years since The LEGO Movie came out in theatres across the globe. Back then we didn’t know quite what to expect. Some feared the worst… To be honest, there had been some LEGO based movies before that, (like Clutch Powers in 2010) and while they were fun in their own way they felt like an extended video game trailer; not something you’d pay to watch in a cinema.
When the first sets based on the movie came out we still didn’t know what to make of it, it was such an eclectic mix of ideas and concepts that it could basically go anywhere, or nowhere at all…
This time round we have a little bit more of an idea. There have been two trailers so far and broad outline of the story has been sketched. Emmet is still very much Emmet, and Wyldstyle is here to save the day. Well, not quite. And as the poster already hinted and the trailers have confirmed, there's a new mini on the block: the minidoll has been included in the second part of a movie that promises to embrace every single original LEGO theme and then some. LEGO is aiming at it's entire audience (well, maybe minus the Technic/MINDSTORMS section) and includes Friends style characters and even DUPLO!
Let’s have a closer look at some of the sets that will be available shortly to promote the movie:
DUPLO STYLE
Did I say DUPLO? Well, aren’t they cute? If we want the entire family to come to the cinema to watch the movie, we might as well start prepping the little ones and familiarise them with the characters.
Thinking how strange and unexpected some parts of the first movie were, I can’t help but wonder if this means that at some point Emmet and Wyldstyle will be transformed into DUPLO dolls. Or is this is just a concession to the younger audience. Probably the latter. In case you want to start saving up, the set number is 10895 - Emmet and Lucy’s Visitors from the DUPLO Planet
CLASSIC STYLE
Another curious set is 70825 - The LEGO Movie 2 Queen Watevra Wa’Nabi’s Build Whatever Box. The box fits perfectly in the Classic brick box theme that LEGO has brought back in the past few years, but this time with a LEGO Movie specific colour mix and some printed pieces to make classic random building with “standard” LEGO fit in with the storyline. There was a lot of brick-built scenery and other fun in the first LEGO Movie and this will evidently continue in the sequel. This looks like the perfect candidate for a family building experience and it looks like one of those sets you may want to have multiples of—if the colour scheme is to your liking. The box contains 455 pieces and will cost around 40€. The title refers to the shape-shifting star queen you can see in the trailer. In other words, this is a character build box!
CREATOR STYLE
Next up is 70831 - The LEGO Movie 2 Emmet's Dream House Rescue Rocket. You can see some of this house/rocket in the trailer, but the style of the set is unmistakably Creator. The house opens up on hinges to show the interior (and let you play inside).
An interesting feature of the box is that it doesn't have a backside: both sides are the front and it's up to you to choose which one you prefer: the Creator presentation of the LEGO Movie 2 presentation. The set comes with an array of characters. We already know Emmet and Lucy Wyldstyle, but here we are introduced to Rex Dangervest, who appears to assist Emmet in his quest to recover Lucy (and the rest of his friends).
There is also a Unikitty (Warrior Kitty) and the set description mentions a buildable "Planty". What role that "character" plays in the story remains to be seen.
Finally, there’s a teal brick separator that draws my attention. No longer orange? This is the first and only set I have seen this in so far. So start saving up the approximately 70€ this set will cost.
Of course there is much more, but that’s for another day when we will have a look at other themes that have been “covered” in The LEGO Movie 2.
