In recent years the Speed Champions theme has been consistently delivering with excellent builds and advanced building techniques. With the second wave of 2024 vehicles about to hit shelves, let’s see how the Lamborghini Lambo V12 Vision Gran Turismo holds up. Based on a futuristic concept car developed for the Gran Turismo video game series, the Lambo is certainly an ambitious vehicle choice. Will the set be able to capture its sleek and futuristic styling?

Box & Contents

The Lambo Vision GT looks stunning on the front box art, while the back of the box showcases rear and top views of the set, plus a front view of the real car. Inside we have a pair of numbered bags, the instruction booklet, and a fairly extensive sticker sheet.

Build Process

After assembling the female driver, the build starts with the rear axle and floor. The hollowed-out front end is constructed as a sub-assembly then securely connected with a Technic axle. A Dark Bluish Grey Technic 1x2 Brick (#32064) used here really should be Black, given that it will be visible whenever the cockpit is opened.

The lifting nose section features a Lamborghini badge and side prints, plus a bucket handle cleverly used as a steering wheel. The front headlights feature Dark Azure tiles and wedges with Olive Green printing on their upper surface. The inboard headlight elements are clipped on, and are more stable than I thought they would be.

The second building stage assembles the rear fenders and a massive diffuser section, featuring some clever (cleaver?) parts usage including Hand Armor (#15407) for the exhaust tips. The rear wing is beautifully constructed to match the geometry of the source material. Two of the newer types of wedge elements are used for the rear bodywork, and the forward canopy and wheels then complete the model.

Features & Functions

Fitting a minifigure driver inside such a low and sleek car must have been quite the design challenge, and the solution here is excellent. It may be a bit drafty for the driver with an open slit between the two 1x4 floor panels, but the mechanism is very satisfying to operate. The car has a subtle forward rake and the huge diffuser/exhaust section is notable for its great parts use and aggressive look, though it is angled a bit too low and extends rearwards further than it should. One further bonus feature is the visible engine detail provided by a pair of 1x2 hinge bricks in the back.

Overall Impression

I love this set. While it might not quite be at the level of 2022's white Countach or last year's McLaren F1 LM, it still does a fantastic job of capturing the Lambo’s sleek futuristic shaping, and was also very fun to build. Although not perfectly accurate to the metallic green of the real car, I think the Olive Green with gold highlights works really well.

One area where things could have been better though is the print and sticker choices. Personally I prefer not to apply stickers at all, yet I feel the full sticker application here leaves the model looking rather cluttered. Some are also very awkward to apply, such as the red tail-light stickers applied to the sides of rounded 1x3 plates. The prints for the wheel hubs and windscreen are excellent, yet the nose badge is placed uncomfortably close to the tip while the prints either side of the windscreen just seem cramped. The Olive Green printing on the headlights also leaves an unfortunate blue outline as viewed from the side.

One stickered area that really should have been printed is the pair of 2x2 curved slopes behind the cockpit, as these look very odd if left unstickered. So if you're looking to modify the build, which for me is a big part of what makes the theme so fun to collect, I would recommend a brick-built solution for this area (see one option below). I would also suggest modifying the rear diffuser/exhaust for a better angle and stronger connection, as well as replacing some of the internal Trans Blue elements and maybe being a bit selective about which stickers to apply. But even unmodified, I think any fan of Speed Champions will love this excellent build.
