Set Review ➟ LEGO® 75381 - Droideka

A droideka! This advanced trade federation combat droid looks great. Remember in Episode I when we saw Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan running away from them? If some Jedi are running away, then these things are really scary! This is a 583-piece set, rated 18+, priced at £64.99 on the LEGO website. It also comes with a droideka minifigure on the display plate, making this set a coveted collector's item. Interestingly, this set is advertised as a ‘small droideka figure’ in its description.

The contents are 6 bags... Finally another set with this material! Plus a manual, a sticker sheet and a printed plate with the droid's characteristics.

The droid starts at what we could consider to be its hips. The use of the reference 6395097 is perfect to be able to establish that triangulation in the droid's supports that are so characteristic. The beginning already begins with a good taste in the mouth.

Next we continue to lengthen the structure upwards, which will make it easier for the droid to roll. The support triad will also be in place. I thought the size would be a bit smaller but I'm seeing that it's not going to be like that.

Wow! The assembly of the arm to a servo-like technic structure is fantastic - remember how a droideka's arms move when it shoots? Well, that's been reproduced quite efficiently here!

Finally we will make the droideka's head with a succession of chain hinges covering the structure with curved slopes.

And now comes the plate display stand as well as the small droideka figure. The latter is not bad for the few pieces it has.

The truth is that there are just under 600 pieces and the droideka is fantastic. The techniques are typical and except for a few sets of parts we could say that the construction is normal but when you meditate it is not. Perhaps what I liked the most about the droid is precisely the beginning. How they have managed to use the reference mentioned at the beginning of the article to obtain the base for the tripod. The display plate and the little droideka make this set a delight. The less positive part is that to make it roll you have to disassemble it, that is to say, you have to remove the 3 legs and turn them upside down, the arms have to be folded as it is obvious and shrink it in a circular way so it is not something ‘automatic’ or fast. However, it is possible to do it ‘manually’ and the result is quite acceptable. But I'll definitely keep the attack position. We thank LEGO for sending the set for this article although LEGO does not endorse or support the opinions expressed in this article.
