Set Review ➟ LEGO® 75379 - R2-D2

In this article we will show you the very special R2-D2 set. The dimension looks very well done and it has an exclusive Darth Malak. If you dig a little bit into the history of this character you will find another one we already know in LEGO minifigures, Darth Revan. Both former Jedi who were abducted to the dark side. This set as many of you already know has a cost on the web of 99,99€ and 1050 pieces. It comes with 2 Darth Malak figures and also R2-D2.

The contents are 12 numbered bags, the construction manual and on this occasion also a sticker sheet.

We start by building the droid and then the actual construction of the set with the R2-D2 trunk. As you can see there is not much to say that catches the eye. We build 3 layers with studs all around with technic bricks and liftarms inside to give firmness to the structure. A mechanism is implemented to support the degrees of movement of the droid's arms. All simple and straightforward. Sometimes that's the best thing.

I was expecting the star minifigure of this set to appear in the last few bags but here it is. As you may have guessed by the end of the previous build, the droid's body now needs to be covered with panels and you're right. Here's what the side looks like. Obvious.

The next bag is a copy and paste of this one but obviously in a speculative way so there is nothing to add to it. The next section is the "back" of "Arturito". With a similar technique to the sides but here we have sought to fasten this part to the sides using a curved slope at the top of each end. Give me a stud and I'll build the world.

Now on the front side we have some interesting steps. As you can see the central construction is divided into 3 plates, the sides with bracket-like plates plus some tiles make a perfect fit and give the droid's belly that characteristic "greebling".

Below is a new printed dish that will be the crown of the droid's head. The head is just a half cube with studs on the sides. It will then be clad to hide the neck hole.

Certainly the technique used is something we have all seen and used many many times. But if there is something positive about this one, it is that despite not being a UCS set, it has something that catches my attention more. It is a compact model, with a good scale and detail. If they had printed the pieces and not used stickers it would be supreme.

We start with one of the droid mounts. The cladding of the structure around 4 1x4 brackets looks pretty good. This part is a very crafty area with small parts that are just crimped together at some loose studs. However once finished the bracket looks sturdy.

Now the base of the stand. I am fascinated by these loose parts that give mobility to the base. It seems trivial but in my opinion it is not at all. The base can move freely and is therefore adaptable to many more surfaces. This detail is great.

Well, we repeat the steps again to build the other support. Nothing to comment. Here you can see the trunk, the arm and its gadgets.

Aha! As you can see in the picture, the plate is printed and not with a sticker. This is fantastic. It shows the manufacturer, sensors, the function of the droid, etc... What do you think about how the little R2-D2 looks like? The truth is that this is a set that for the price is a "must to have". For 100€ just over 1000 pieces, a Darth Malak minifigure that in my opinion is very special for what it represents in the Star Wars story and certainly because it is a very detailed construction, playable, yes, playable because it is very robust! Believe me when I tell you that it has literally been churned in my hands and not a single piece has come off. Which is impressive. And of course not least because it has a collector's value for display that is enhanced by a fantastic printed plaque. We are grateful to LEGO for providing this set for this review although LEGO does not support or endorse the opinions expressed in this review.
