Set Review ➟ LEGO® 76964 - Dinosaur fossils: T. Rex skull

It seems that with the Natural History Museum set the fossil ban has opened. One example is this new set in which we can build a fossilised skull of the fearsome Tyrannosaurus Rex, the absolute king predator of prehistoric times. It is a set with 577 pieces and a price of 39.99€. It will be released to the public on New Year's Day 2024.

This is a decorative set in my opinion. Despite not being marked for 18+ I don't see a 9+ year old and upwards playing it too much, maybe if it were complete.... well it would be very flimsy. Maybe he will surprise us and we can see that at least the skull is sturdy and playable. We'll see. Opening the set we see a new reference. Un nuevo tipo de semicolumna con agujeros para pines technic lo cual le dota de mayores posibilidades. El set se compone de 6 bolsas, manual y una pegatina. What a pity as I was expecting the tile to be printed.

How deluded I am :/.

If you guessed that the start would be at the base of the set, you were right. The base has no mystery and the best thing about it is the amber with the mosquito which is hidden behind the part that will house the information panel and the footprint on the rock.

Next we will make the dinosaur footprint. This part combines SNOT techniques using brackets and the process is really interesting. The result is very well achieved without a doubt.

Throughout the following bags we will discover the construction of the complete skull. Technically he emphasizes the use of brackets, curved slopes and of course the colours tan and dark tan to give it that bony tone that is appropriate in a model like this. As you can see in the following 3 images, the upper part of the T-Rex's jaw and the back of the skull are made to cover it later with curved slopes and the parts that will be added to complete the model.

The upper part of the skull defining the muzzle is only a "cap" of a plate, but surprisingly it does not clash with the line of the model. Finally the lower part of the jaw is added separately, i.e. the two sides are overlapped by the chin piece. This is without any doubt the area that has surprised me the most because as you can see two images below the upper and lower teeth fit together and that is an excellent detail.

However, if we look at the model from the front, maybe it lacks a little more thickness. Remember that the manual tells us that a skull of this dinosaur was formed by only 46 bones and we have used 382 LEGO pieces so we should have achieved it :D . It is a well made model and without a doubt for the fossil fan or the Jurassic world in general or for the AFOL in particular it is a very cute model. On the other hand it's a model that for a regular amateur builder is not difficult but I think that for a layman who is not used to build LEGO sets it will be quite an abstract model. But that doesn't mean that you can't enjoy building it. We are grateful to LEGO for providing the set for this review, but LEGO does not endorse or support the opinions expressed in this review.
