Set Review ➟ LEGO® 71414 Conkdor's Noggin

LEGO Super Mario enters it’s fourth year strong as ever. Of course Mario is no longer “alone”. There’s Luigi and also Princess Peach, and as the number of playable characters grows so does the range of expansion sets. Some are themed closer to one character or to another, but 71414 Conkdor's Noggin is an expansion set that is not specifically associated with Mario, Luigi or Princess Peach.

At first glace the build looks simple though quite adorable and sow e set out to build it without consulting the building instructions first. All we used to go on were the images on the box as well as a magnifying glass to see some parts of the images in greater detail – I suppose a visit to the optician is in order.

Reverse engineering a set like that is easier than you might think. You have a very specific set of elements before so half of the job is done. Then it is just a matter of identifying the elements you can see in the pictures and figuring out what to do with the ones you can’t see. The smaller the set, the easier this process is.

We still double checked the build against the actual instructions and I am happy to say we didn’t find any mistakes in our build. And I must say we enjoyed the build at least as much as the gameplay. Gameplay is actually fairly limited though somewhat more complex than just scanning the code on the back of its head. You start out with Conkdor looking up and hit the round plate in front of it to get its head down. Then it’s time to scan the code. Conkdor’s beak then rests on the second mechanism that allows you to bump it pack up. Lowering it a second time for a second scan gives you double the points. Of course you can get the same result by scanning the code, wating a second or two and rescanning it, but that would be cheating, now wouldn’t it?

Despite the constant pounding, Conkdor is doing fine and hasn't complained

We wish to thank LEGO for providing this set for review. They did not ask for us to like the set, but we still do.
