Set Review ➟ LEGO® 40632 Aragorn & Arwen
In my second review on the new Lord of the Rings BRICKHEADZ I will have a closer look at 40632 Aragorn & Arwen. These were also the second BRICKHEADZ set I built and I enjoyed them quite a bit more than the previous 40630 Frodo & Gollum. These are full sized figures (full sized in BRICKHEADZ terms) and again I love the fact that there are 2 separate instruction booklets for the 2 models so I can share the building experience with a family member.
Let’s start with Arwen. Since you build from the bottom up, you start with Arwen’s (spring) yellowish green dress. This was my first encounter with PLATE 1X1X2/3. Seeing how it is used (2 of them stacked right next to a brick + plate stack) I don’t see any benefit in having this element in the set, but I suppose it is a way of making the element more widely available through BrickLink from people who part out multiples of these small sets to add to their shop inventory. It is not available yet in reddish brown so a little later on in the build you simply get 2 1x1 plates to stack. These BRICKHEADZ look like a premium source for Bricks with studs on side. There is a single printed plate that provides the detail of Arwen’s crown on her forehead, combined with a series of metallic silver elements to circle around her head. The only other clear identifier for Arwen’s character) other than being presented next to Aragorn) are her elvish ears. Or rather, they ought to be. Pointy ears are the hallmark of elves in LOTR, but the double cheese slopes don’t look particularly pointy, just … prominent.
Aragorn wears a similar circle around his head with a nicely printed tile shield as the centrepiece of his crown. His hair is a lot more detailed (less stylised) than Arwen’s and there is also a second printed element – a 2x4 tile with his breastplate. Aragorn’s cape is not as wide as Frodo’s and uses a somewhat different design, so no repetition there. As BRICKHEADZ go this one is easier to identify, but again, placed side by side, they make a lovely couple.
I’m taking Frodo out of the box again to place hm besides these two. His pointy ears are camouflaged by his curls, which is probably why the lack of pointy part didn’t bother me quite so much as with Arwen. Put next to Arwen and Aragorn, Frodo makes much more sense. I’m still not a fan of Gollum though.
Disclaimer: I do not identify as hobbit or elf, nor as Lord of Gondor. I am starting to feel some affinity to these figures though. As usual, any my opinions are just that.
We wish to thank LEGO for providing this set for review
