Set Review ➟ LEGO® 71785 Jay's Titan Mech

This time in this review it's the turn of Jay and his mecha titan. With 794 pieces, a cost of 79,99€ and six minifigures it promises to be a lot of fun. The Wu-bot is a curious minifigure as it has legs like any normal minifigure, but the torso-head according to the box would look like a 2x2 plate with a printed tile, but if that were the case there would be no way to fit the legs. We'll see what it actually looks like later on.

The contents are divided into 8 numbered bags, plus as in the previous reviews there is also a bag with the bone weapons as well as the instruction manual. As you can see it seems that LEGO is putting in these cardboard folders the manuals that have a certain size for better preservation. The truth is that it is quite annoying when you have a folded manual as it is very hard to turn the construction pages. It is a good detail to take this into account for better preservation.

The set starts by building the small enemy squadron. I've gone a bit crazy to build the Bone Knight because stickers are needed and I couldn't find them. You have already seen that in the content of the image they didn't appear and, deluded me, I thought that in this set there were no stickers... They were in the instructions folder! So they don't get lost :) Once the incident was solved, here you can see the "skull trio" and the sticker sheet.

The trolley has a launching system that, although it looks very good, is not very strong, on the one hand it is good to avoid unnecessary accidents, but on the other hand it is rather poor. It does work and the mechanism is very simple to implement.

And now comes the start of the main course. The construction of the mecha titan. We start assembling Jay's minifigure and check that a couple of unknown references are coming :)

We attack the first steps and we can see that we are building the mecha's pelvis, nothing trivial, it always attracts me to go into the intricacies of the pure and simple implementation. Strong and quite millimetric construction to get that pelvic pose with respect to the torso that we could already see in the box set. This part is divided into 3 zones, the lower part of the pelvis, the torso and the front behind which Jay will be located to drive this titan.

The next part we will build the thighs using covers over brackets, the connection with the groins of the titan is not to be missed. It's quite strong but it's not really very movable.

With the following bag the question about the Wu-bot is solved, now I will explain. First let's take a look at the new references that appear, as well as the printed tile that acts as the bot's face.

The bot is just the reference 6218823, 1x2x2x2 brick with studs on one side that fits perfectly into the legs. We always learn by building sets those tricks of the LEGO world. What do you think of the figure? Very cool.

Next we will continue extending the extremities starting from a structure also with brackets and a double kneecap in series to connect it with the thighs, finishing with the knee pads. The knee brace on the left leg doesn't close so well due to the technic pieces we put on the thigh which I understand will be where the katanas will be placed. We'll see how it looks later, for the moment I don't like the gap between the knee pad and the knee.

And now we will do the feet of the titan to see how it stands. Seeing the size of the sole, I think it looks great. They are quite cute, they even look like they have a tongue :)

When assembling them and playing a bit with some positions I have found that if you cause a sprain in the model the tongue collides with the blue studs and it deforms in its corners. It is not designed to be able to do very complex postures. Nor can the model be supported on only one leg as the groin has only a couple of positions to the outer side. This wick has to work a lot on yoga because it's stiffer than me! :D.

Nevertheless, it is very firm and certainly looks colossal.

Now let's go for the arms. Building with instructions is always trivial but when you analyse certain parts you realise how difficult it is to design things like this. Combining technic parts with normal bricks is always expensive. Here the technical result in my opinion is very good, but the aesthetic one does not please me so much. I have the feeling that the arms are a bit too narrow for such big hands. What do you think?

In the penultimate wrap we build Nya and make the cannons that go on the model's shoulders. We discover some new cannons, how big they are! We also see a kind of short and wide rapier.

Once the cannons are mounted they look like this, the truth is that by covering the nakedness of the shoulders the model gains a lot.

We reached the final stretch of construction. We check another couple of new pieces. Here we will put that kind of samurai crest that looks so good on the titan and that gave some samurai a very fierce look, we will also make the katanas since they are the same and therefore there is no wakizashi and also the fearsome sword that he carries in his right hand.

The model is quite big and has quite a lot of details, some of them technical and substantial, so a 9+ is a pretty good age in my opinion. The pity is that it's not a very playable model in the strict sense of the word, as the limbs in general don't move like the tiny mechas in the previous sets did. Personally I miss that playability. If I try to pick up a katana with my right arm (with my left arm it would be impossible due to the path of the weapon), it doesn't reach... so they are just decorative katanas :/. As a model it's very nice and attractive and it will delight the little ones and not so little ones at home, it has a very tasty cut as well as a nice detail to have it on display.
