Set Review ➟ 71735 Tournament of Elements
This year LEGO Ninjago celebrates its 10th anniversary. It is surprising that so much time has passed, but it is. The franchise wanted to launch its year with the continuation of a series much loved by fans: Ninjago Legacy. This series is made up of sets inspired by old seasons and others that have been renewed.
In this review we have the pleasure of analyzing the famous set 71735 “Tournament of Elements”. This space was first seen during the second episode of the fourth season of Ninjago. It is located on the island of the evil Chen, the main villain of season 4.
Let's get started with the review!
As soon as we open the box we find three bags, a tornado-shaped piece (called Spinner), some stickers and, of course, the instructions.
In the bag 1 there are three minifigures (Lloyd Legacy, Kai and Eyezor), a piece that will be added under the tornado so that it can rotate and the pieces necessary to assemble the central part of the dojo. In this area of the dojo there is a weapon rack.
In bag 2 there are two more minifigures (Jay and Gravis). There are also pieces to build the Spinner's handle and the area to the left of the set, equipped with a mysterious book and two rotating sharp blades.
With bag 3 we will finish building the set! This bag contains two minifigures (Jacob and Bolobo) and the part to the right and top of the Tournament of the Elements. The area on the right has a box with a surprise and in the upper one there are three green sharp leaves and two vases.
The whole set looks like this:
The Tournament of Elements hides certain surprises, such as:
A box with some hidden rollers.
A book with dark spells inside.
A vase with a knife inside. ide
One of the reasons this set is fun is the handle of the Spinner and the Spinner itself. It is interesting to see the evolution of this simple but wonderful piece. It started in 2011 as the physical representation of Spinjitzu with a simple shape, like the one that can be seen in the two images below and has becoming a much more elaborated system.
Minifigures are a very important component in all sets.
This limited edition golden Lloyd Legacy is equipped with two golden swords. He is on a small stand with a circular piece commemorating LEGO Ninjago's 10th anniversary. Many minifigures have two faces, and this one is no exception. On one side he is angry, while on the other he is kinder.
Kai is the ninja of fire and in this edition the warrior is uncapped, the only thing that covers his face is his mouth, which is covered with a handkerchief. To defend himself Kai has a scythe. His two faces are similar to those of his partner Lloyd. On one side he is angry, while on the other he is more cheerful.
Jay is the ninja of lightning. He defends himself with some nunchucks and dresses like his friend Kai, with a ninja outfit and a scarf that covers his mouth. Like the other two ninjas, Jay has one angry face and one happy face.
Bolobo is the elemental teacher of nature that is why he carries with him a powerful tree branch. Their faces are similar to those of ninjas: an angry face and a happy one.
Gravis is the elemental master of gravity. He controls gravity with his hands. This character also has two faces. In one he looks surprised and in the other concentrated.
Jacob is the master of sound, and he is armed with a guitar. On one of his two faces he is happy, unlike the other, on which he is disgusted.
Eyezor is an anacondrai cultist and Chen's servant. He carries with him an axe. Unlike the rest of the minifigures, Eyezor only has one face.
The following pieces are what struck me most:
From the left column, the first two pieces I had never seen and have not found any similar pieces. The two pieces are used to build the handle of the Spinner.
The tornado is a unique piece of LEGO Ninjago. It's the Spinner.
As for the piece on the right, I had already seen a similar one, only without those two lines that are in the middle dividing the rectangle.
The two pieces below, at first I confused them with two other pieces. Later I realized that they were different. In the following images we show those pieces that gave me confusion so that the same does not happen to you.
In all sets there are some spare special bricks. These are the ones that are left over after building the Tournament of Elements:
Since the LEGO Ninjago line appeared in 2011, I have owned several sets from this franchise, a fact that sets the bar very high by having built many other LEGO sets in the series. Even so, this time like others in which I have the opportunity to build LEGO Ninjago sets, I was surprised to see the evolution in each set, noticing an improvement in the last ones. This one is no exception, it includes construction techniques from some Ninjago temples, original weapon mounts, novel mysteries and a total of seven minifigures, all built on a base that is renewed year after year.
We would like to thank LEGO® for providing the set for review. However, LEGO does not approve nor endorse the opinions we publish in our reviews.
