Set Review ➟ 42122 Jeep Wrangler

Today we start off or reviews for the 2021 Technic sets. The first of these stars a collaboration with Jeep and its iconic Wrangler model.

The set comes in a medium sized box and contains 665 elements, including a few interesting printed parts.

The back of the box shows some of the features of this model. It also confirms that this model doesn't come with an alternative build, as is customary in Technic sets with a lisence.

The carefully chosen angle shows how good a match the LEGO model is to the original. It also shows the novel placement of the HOG as well as most (though not all) of its mechanical features.

The box also provides some information about the model the set represents, like its weight, engine capacity and other mechanical features.

The opposite side of the side of the box shows the real size of the tire and rim assembly.

Inside the box you will find 2 series of numbered bags to split the build into stages, The instruction booklet and small sticker sheet as well as the 5 tires.

Let's have a closer look at some of the parts in the set. First up, the tires (just to show off I've been playing with my camera :D) and the silver coloured rims.

More interesting are a few printed parts, all of which are used for the characteristic grille of the Jeep.

Time to start building.

The model starts off with the central section which includes the transmission for the HOG. This is placed at a curious angle to come out behind the cab without sticking out over the roof. In this way the shape of the car is preserved while still providing easy access t the steering mechanism.

The stickers in this set are generally quite good. Getting the stickers inside the seats is not the easiest of tasks..

Both sides of the central part get a turntable attached to hold the front and rear axles.

The steering mechanism is fairly simple, but works well. Unfortunately the resulting steering radius is really big, but then again that is something that many LEGO Technic models have in common. I wish LEGO could find a way to improve this because that super large turning circle makes it harder to really play with the set.

The rear axle is fairly simple and solid.

In front of the steering mechanism you build a winch. The winch relies on the friction of the pin it is attached to and doesn't have a lock. Reeling in the cable is done by turning the grey 16t gear. Once again, the mechanism is simple but effective.

Finally it is time to use the printed parts to build the grille and the engine cover. It's just a cover though. The model doesn't come with a (working) engine.

The doors once again are simple and straightforward, but the sticker of the door handle really makes it come alive.

The hood makes use of an element I hadn't seen before. This 2 x 3 panel comes with 3 axle holes and has the perfect curve to finish the hood

Just a few System elements to create the rear lights

Add few more pieces and the wheels and you're ready. The picture below clearly illustrates how well hidden the HOG is. It comes out through the rear of the cabin and sits in the centre of the double rear seat. The seat can be folded down to leave more space for cargo or folded up to allow for passengers.

Time to take it for a spin. The model does really well on rough terrain.

The rear seat is not the most comfortable place for the passengers, but it does it's job

And the winch is indispensable to deal with the more challenging situations

Of course rough terrain has it's challenges and dangers so a spare tire can come in really handy

Double check the engine is running just fine

And we are good to go

Overall the set is fun to build and has all the features you would expect in a set this size. It looks good and - and this is where the model scores big - it is just the right size for Technic figures. The only real drawback: the large turning radius.

We wish to thank LEGO for providing this set for review. The opinions in this review are not supported or endorsed by LEGO.
