Set Review ➟ 76161 The Batwing

Box front

Batman fans are in luck, if LEGO® already surprised us last year with the 1989 Batmobile (76139), this year they bring us another icon from the Tim Burton’s movie, the Batwing! How to forget the scene with the full moon in the background?

BOX AND CONTENT

The box already comes with the new format for adults, where on the front all the prominence is the Batwing, vertically, as the Batman logo. Little else appears on the front, the name, the Batman logo and the LEGO® logo. This front gives it that noir character that goes with the Dark Knight.

Box back

On the back, instead of showing details or moving parts of the set, the main image is the set placed horizontally, there also are four vignettes, one showing that the set can be hung on the wall as a decoration, another with the measures of the set mounted on the base, a third one where the set is shown on the base and finally a vignette with the minifigs included in the set.

The set has 2363 parts, distributed in bags numbered from 1 to 13, a bag with structural parts and another with the cockpit windows. In addition, the instruction book with the sticker sheet.

MINIFIGS

The set includes three minifigs, a Joker one, in black and white, that pays tribute to the classic television series. Another one is the same Batman that comes with the 1989 Batmobile set, with the molded cape and hood, not cloth. And the last one is a boombox goon. All three are presented on a base simulating a cornice with two gargoyles on the sides.

The Joker figure, as mentioned, comes in black and white, with a top hat and tailcoat. The legs are decorated to simulate checked trousers and shoes, which is not usual in minifigs, but really appreciated.

Minifigs

As I have mentioned before, the Batman figure is the same one as the one we meet with the 1989 Batmobile set. Like that one, in this one, the most remarkable thing and the best is the cape made with a mold, instead of cloth. Hopefully this practice spreads to more minifigs.

Finally, we have the figure of the boombox goon, a Joker bully. Not too much remarkable in this figure, the best is the torso, very detailed frontal and back, what are we saying about decorating the legs…?

BUILDING

To be honest, this set doesn’t stand out for its assembly. The explanation is very simple, as it’s a flying vehicle, practically flat, as it’s been assembled, the work that is being done is not appreciated, since nothing projects in terms of geometry or volume, and it may seem that it doesn’t advance.

Structure and part of fuselage

Detail of the cockpit

Initially, the structure of the set is assembled, as is usual in these cases, a lot of beams and a lot of technic pins. Subsequently, the aircraft fuselage is placed, which as can be seen is a matter of combining plates. A third phase consists of outlining the wings, as well as the concave parts between the wings and the central body.

It’s at this point that we find one of the few interesting things in the assembly, the rounded and curved profile of the wings. For this, short plates and hinges are used, the highlight is when it comes to joining everything to the structure, where a tap 1x is used, fitting it into a 1x1 brick with side stud, to tell an example of the technique used. This type of technique together with the use of the corners from the structure makes the profiling not to move.

Before ending with the final detailing, the interior of the cockpit is finished, and the rear and front parts of the aircraft, another of the entertaining moment of the assembly since it’s necessary to give a certain roundness to the construction.

Cockpit

Finally, the cockpit glass is built, the last details to give texture to the fuselage and the base where the finished set is displayed.

As you can see there is not much else to highlight or comment on the assembly, as mentioned above, it’s unfortunate that, as construction progresses, it does not shine, and it seems that it does not progress, but the shape of the vehicle is what causes this.

Set finished

This doesn’t mean that it’s a bad set, on the contrary! It’s a magnificent set that every Batman fan must have and, if you already have the 1989 Batmobile, even more so.

Be Batman!
