Set Review ➟ 71367 Mario’s House and Yoshi

The LEGO Super Mario Expansion Set we are reviewing today is a little different from the other Expansion Sets we have reviewed so far. Rather than battle an enemy, in this set, Mario comes home to meet a friend and have a rest. But of course there is a little more than meets the eye in this set, so let’s have a closer look.

The first element you build in this set is Yoshi, a fictional dinosaur who has been friends with Mario since 1990. Yoshi has been useful as a game element in various different ways in the game, but in this set Mario is glad to find a friendly face and upon greeting Yoshi (by scanning his tile) Mario displays a heart and scores a coin. As with other friends of Mario’s, the tile with the barcode is no actually part of Yoshi, but is located beside him.

After scanning Yoshi’s tile you get access to the rest of the building instructions in the app, so let us move on to the next element.

It’s time to build a house for Mario. The structure is fairly simple, but has an unmistakable look to it. There is a 2x4 tile with rounded corners above the door announcing this is Mario’s house. Although the door opens, the house is little more than a shell.

However, it conceals an action brick under the roof. Mario can open the roof by jumping on the sides of the roof to reveal the prize.

There is no guidance in the app about what this action block does, but a little digging and playing with this and other expansion sets has resulted in the following list. After scanning the Super Star action brick Mario gets the following “powers”.

The next element is… a hammock! The set contains a small piece of cloth that is strung between a tree and a bush. There is a knob resembling a tree trunk sticking out of the bush that can be used to rock Mario gently to sleep. Of course it doesn’t make much sense to let Mario sleep during a game (he would lose valuable time), but it is a fun extra for some downtime and definitely a cool display piece.

Finally, there is also a Goomba in this set, giving you an opportunity to score some points.

By itself, the Expansion set is a nice display piece, but you cannot really get the full potential out of it. There really is not much you can use the Super Star power for. But combined with other Expansion sets, this Super Power can be really important and allow you to score much better or defeat enemies you wouldn’t otherwise be able to.

We wish to thank LEGO for providing this set for review. The opinions in this review are not supported or endorsed by LEGO.
