Build Something BATMAN
Under this motto, LEGO will launch on January the new sets related to the upcoming LEGO BATMAN movie.
We have received from LEGO the first batch of sets to have a look on them. And I found the same problem I had 3 years ago, when the LEGO Movie sets were released. I can't establish relationships between the set and the movie. That's why this overview of the smaller sets will be incomplete.
Due that it is a license, the boxes have a glossy finish. This fact makes that the box itself is more attractive. Unfortunately it is not possible to open and fold the small boxes, as you can do with the bigger ones, and with some seasonal sets. It will be a small nightmare for collectors, as they put value on keeping the boxes together with the set.
70900 The Joker Balloon Escape
The smallest set includes two minifigures: BATMAN and Joker. The price target is €14,99.
Batman has two face expressions (serious and angry) and includes the belt as a separate part. It has the bat-weapon as complement.
Joker has also two face expression, one smiling and one laughing. The hair is the most significant pieces of the set, due to its detail. He has a very long cape, which is visible when Joker is flying…
Yes, Joker flies because he's wearing a backpack with ballons. This backpack has a structure made to make it robust and has two supports to make it stable when leaving it on the ground and to give stability whenit is weared by Joker. It has 5 balloons in three colours.
There is also a tank that holds a kind of explosive gas. It has a computer to control the system, a pipe with a tab and the tank. There is a lever that makes the tank explode and this is the only "playability" of the set.
The set looks very colorful and it includes BATMAN and Joker, which is very nice for a small set. The backpack with the balloons is the best part of the set, although the tank is interesting too.
70902 Catwoman Catcycle Chase
This set is a little bit larger compared to the prior one. The price target is €19,99.
The first difference is that this set includes 3 minifigures... and none of them is Batman!!!
The Batgirl wears a purple dress and mask, that includes as accessory, a ponytail in brown colour, that can be attached to the helmet with a small stud. The cape is yellow / gold with a bright side and a matte one. The legs have also side print, so the minifig is superb.
Robin is another minifigure the will be present in a lot of sets. It has a standard head with two expressions (happy and surprised) and the hair part includes glasses that show big eyes in a green background. The cape is similar than the one in the Batgirl, but the end of the cape is straight.
The Catwoman is, in my opinion, the less interesting minifig. The only complement is the belt and the mask, but all the minifig is dark purpre, even the head. It has the face printed in flesh and the mouth. The mask has printed the eyemask in silver. The decoration of the minifig is black and silver. The minifig looks a little bit dark.
The set includes a motorbike and a jewelry shop.
The Catcycle is the best part of the set. In the pictures it looks like a simple model. I didn't have too much expectations before opening the box. After building it, I really like it. It's very well modelled. It is a custom motorbike with wide wheels. It is completely built with technic parts and decorated with estandard parts. There is the new Tile 1 x 1 Half Circle Extended (Stadium) with Groove in silver grey with a cylinder pattern. With 4 of that parts there is reproduced de V4 engine of the bike. there is also a sIope curved 2 x 2 with the clocks and some purple flames printed.
The jewelry shop is quite simple. It consists of two walls, a window, a door and a small display for the jewels. In the outside there is a lamppost that can be folded down when Catwoman is trying to stole the jewels…
Although the figures and the Catcycle are nice, the playability of the set is limited. I expected some more functions to play with. The jewelry shop is very simple and probably the set could be launched without it, and reduce the price a little bit. Anyway, my overall opinion is that it is a good set, taking in count the quality of the figures and the Catcycle.
70910 - Scarecrow Special Delivery
This set has the same size and target price of the 70902 Catwoman Catcycle Chase. It include 3 minifigures: Batman, Security guard and Scarecrow.
The Batman minifigure is the same in the set 70900 but with different face expressions. This figure will be the mots common one in the sets, as he is the main character, but there are slightly differences between each set, basically the different face expressions.
The Security guard is a standard minifigure. It wears black suit and it has the police cap of the city sets, but in black. It has also two face expressions, but in this case, with two separated heads. It is decorated in both sides of the torso, but nothing remarkable.
Scarecrow has a very nice decoration. It has decoration in the helmet, torso, arms and legs (front and sides). It wears a yellow t-shirt with Pizza logo and broken pants.
The best model I have seen until now, is the Pizza Motorbike. It's a model based in the first motorbike launched on 2005, but the designers have done a fantastic interpretation, converting it to a "BMW C1" like motorbike. They added a column in the rear side and the windscreen is attached at the top of this column. There is also a trailer connected to the motorbike. It is suposed to be used to transport pizza but there is a kind of chemical can inside. Turning the pizza signal on the top, the laterals are pushed out and you can see that chemical can (To be confirmed in the movie).
There are two new printed parts. The Pizza Box and the scary pizza.
Finally there is a small building, a security booth to enter the "Gotham Energy" facilities. Like in the other set, it is very simple, although it has a security cam and a barrier.
This set is a little bit more playable than the prior one, but I think the motorbike is enough reason to purchase the set. The idea is very nice and the only complaint is that the connection between the motorbike and the trailer is too strong. The minifigs are ok for the set, although they are not the best ones.
Conclusion
That small sets are a nice start to collect the minifigures of the movie. There are some nice models but the playability is limited. There are some interesting building techniques, although they are easy and fast to build. The target price corresponds to license sets, so you get some minifigures and limited quantity of bricks.
