Set Review ➟ 60092 Deep Sea Submarine

The new deep sea exploring subtheme expands the horizons of the City theme to include the bottom of the sea. It has been several years since we last saw divers of this type and even more if we only look at Town/City sets. The first wave of this subtheme consists of 6 sets and the 60092 Deep Sea Submarine is a perfect starter. The two smaller sets are little more than minifig packs with accessories and the two largest sets are more than double or triple the price of this one. In addition, the entire action of this set takes place below sea level.

Let’s have a closer look at the contents…

For starters there’s the box: the yellow submarine is a real attraction on the blue background and the scene that is depicted tells enough of the story to let your imagination take over.

The set contains three minifigs and a shark, promising a lot of playability.

On the one hand there are the two divers and their attacker/pet the shark. It is nice to see that one of them is female—a little diversity is always appreciated.

The divers swim around a small part of the bottom of the sea, that consists of a rock and the skeleton of a sea monster that hides a treasure chest.

The instructions for this part are contained in the first booklet.

The second booklet describes how to build the submarine which also contains the third minifig. The rear of the submarine at first looks like a solid block.but there are containers in its sides for tools or samples and the rotors can turn to propel the submarine in the desired direction. At the front is the cabin/cockpit which has two levers to steer the vessel and stickers on the inside walls simulating controls. The sub also has two arms, one with three fingers to grab things (or maybe a shark) and the other with 4 different tools.

The entire structure of the sub is then placed on the flotation tanks and their frame to complete the construction.

The set has only a few stickers which can easily be left off (although any child will want to apply them all). It is a pity the black rotors at the back don’t fit inside their housing, but that is really the only drawback I have found for this set. It is a very complete set which really invites you to play out the scene. Time to go on a deep sea treasure hunt!
