Set Review ➟ 21020 La Fontana de Trevi

Within the series of European monuments that LEGO has released in the Architecture theme, today we have built a somewhat special model. This time we are not facing a building itself, but the iconic Trevi Fountain. This is undoubtedly the most famous fountain in Rome, and some consider it also the most beautiful. It is a baroque monument, and therefore it has a great level of detail and decoration, which is a challenge for Architecture scale models. Rok Zgalin Kobe is the model designer.

The box of the set is the classic Architecture box, so no surprise there. The instruction booklet also follows the normal pattern. The first pages are devoted to the actual monument, with technical data and information on its history. All the information is in English and Italian (more languages on the website of LEGO Architecture) and it is illustrated with beautiful pictures of the monument.

The set has about 739 pieces, highlighting the 97 “1x2 trans light blue plates” that are used to simulate the water in the fountain. The remaining parts are mostly white, and small “plates” abound. For me it is an interesting selection of parts, but that depends on the builder.

The construction is aclassic bottom-up, and is quite entertaining, except the steps where you have to place all that “trans light blue plates” to simulate the water, which are a bit boring. The front facade is where the decoration is concentrated, with a profusion of "jumper plates" to simulate the cornices.

Given the characteristics of the monument, it has no back facade, being a model that should be presented with the front toward the observer. Anyway, the windows of the front facade have continuity to the back of the model, which lets the light enter from behind the windows, giving them more life.

The decoration is completed with white “microfigs” representing small sculptures and two intelligently built small hippocampi inside the fountain.

The final result is excellent, both the decoration and the water effect are phenomenally solved, and once finished it is a great decorative model. Clearly its architectural interest may differ from previous models in the line, and certainly Rome can be an endless source of architectural gems, but the monument is known worldwide and the model is solved with quality, making it an outstanding set.
